NAME
cdctl - controls your cdrom or dvdrom drive
SYNOPSIS
cdctl [-abcdeghklmoprstuvV] [--pause] [--speed] [--close] [--disc] [--eject] [--getstatus] [--help] [--capabilities] [--list] [--mcn] [--lockdoor] [--play] [--resume] [--stop] [--tocentry] [--autoclose] [--volume] [--version] [--numslots]
DESCRIPTION
cdctl is a utility to control your cdrom or dvdrom drive, to query it, and to play audio CDs on it. cdctl does not do many things by itself, but rather relies on the kernel ioctl(2) functions in drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c, the uniform cdrom driver, to do the work. Earlier kernels do not have certain capabilities, and only recent kernels (2.2.4 and above, with uniform cdrom driver version 2.53) have capability readback and eject button locking.
OPTIONS
- -a, --pause
- Pauses the drive if it is currently playing an audio disc, otherwise has no effect.
- -bS, --speed=S
- Asks the drive to cap its maximum speed to S. S is a multiple of 150 kilobytes per second, the speed at which a 1x drives runs. This option is useful for making your drive run quieter if you have a very fast drive.
- -c, --close
- Closes the cdrom tray, if possible. Note that many drives report that they have a tray (and it can be closed) when they are interrogated, but in reality do not, and can not. Pioneer "slot" drives and miniaturized laptop drives in particular have this behavior. In this case, cdctl will return the kernel error message and the kernel will write a dump of the ATAPI error the drive returns to your kernel logs.
- -d, --disc
- Changes the disc on a multi-disc changer, or jukebox. Note that again, many drives misreport their ability to change discs. cdctl will try to warn you of the manufacturer's incompetance in this case.
- -e, --eject
- Ejects the disc tray on a tray loading drive, the caddy on a caddy loading drive, or just the disc on a slot loading drive. Works on many other devices as well, such as the sparc floppy drive, zip drives, jaz drives, certain tape drives such as the Exabyte Mammoth, and any other device that implements the CDROMEJECT ioctl(2) call in its driver. This option tends to work on more drives than the --close option.
- -g, --getstatus
- Prints the status of the cd in the drive. The only status codes are for CDs currently; please contact the kernel mailing list or the cdrom driver maintainer to help get the DVD status codes implemented in the Linux kernel. There are eleven possibilites:
- No info available
- Which usually means there is no disc in the drive,
- No disc
- Which means the drive explicitly says there is no disc in the drive,
- Tray is open
- Which means that the tray (if any) is open. Very few drives report this one; instead most say that there is no disc in the drive.
- Drive is not ready
- Which means the drive is busy. ATAPI drives have no way of distinguishing between not ready and an open tray, so the Linux kernel always returns "tray is open" in case it gets this response. Therefore, if you ever do get this response on an ATAPI drive, please notify the linux kernel mailing list immediately; you've found a kernel bug! Other drivers that do support this response are the cdu31a driver, the cm206 driver, the mcd driver, and the sbpcd driver.
- OK now
- Which means that an error condition is no longer present. No one has reported this response from a drive yet; if you do see it, mail the cdctl developers immediately.
- Audio disc
- Which means there is a red-book PCM audio disc in the drive. This is the type of CD people talk about when they go to the record store to get music.
- Data type 1
- Which means there is a type 1 data cd (2048 bytes / sector) in the drive. Type 1 data CDs have reduced capacity, but additional error correction information.
- Data type 2
- Which means there is a type 2 data cd (2336 bytes / sector) in the drive. Type 2 data CDs have increased capacity, but less error correction information.
- Multisession type 1
- Which means there is a type 1 multisession cd in the drive. These are just like a type 1 data cd, but have multiple sessions on it (have been written on more than once).
- Multisession type 2
- Which means there is a type 2 multisession cd in the drive. These are just like a type 2 data cd, but have multiple sessions on it (have been written on more than once).
- Mixed-mode
- Which means that there is a mixed-mode cd in the drive, with both audio and data tracks on it.
- -h, --help
- Prints out a command summary.
- -k, --capabilities
- Prints out the capabilities of an ATAPI or SCSI drive, as reported by drive's capability response and as interpreted by the Linux kernel. Many drives give wrong responses, which I interpret as a sign of incompetance on their part. Your interpretation may differ. Please send responses of non-ATAPI/SCSI drives to the cdctl maintainers.
- -l, --list
- Prints out a list of tracks on the current disc, and whether they are audio or data.
- -m, --mcn
- Prints out the MCN (or Medium Catalog Number, previously the UPC), if any. Most drives do read this, but many don't. The only two situations that you are likely to use this in are 1) if you manage to find an audio CD with the MCN on it or 2) if you make a disc yourself with the MCN on it. Pretty useless unless you are a disc publisher.
- --numslots
- Prints out the number of slots on your cdrom changer.
- -oS, --lockdoor=S
- Locks the eject button so the disc cannot be manually ejected. Requires kernel version 2.2.4 or newer. Set S to 0 to unlock the drive, and to 1 to lock it.
- -pT, --play=T
- Plays audio tracks, if any. T takes the form START-FINISH or START:FINISH. Either START or FINISH or both may be omitted. If this confuses you, try these examples:
- cdctl --play
- Plays all audio tracks.
- cdctl --play=1
- Plays all audio tracks, beginning from track 1.
- cdctl --play=1-3
- Plays audio tracks 1 through 3.
- cdctl --play=4
- Plays all audio tracks, beginning from track 4.
- cdctl --play=-9
- Plays any audio tracks through track 9.
- cdctl --play=5:9
- Plays any audio tracks from track 5 through track 9. Colons work as well as dashes.
- -r, --resume
- Resumes playing an audio CD, if paused. See the --pause option.
- -s, --stop
- Stops playing an audio CD, if currently playing. See the --play option.
- -tT, --tocentry=T
- Prints out the table of contents entry for track T.
- -uS, --autoeject=S
- Sets the autoclose bit to S. This controls whether the drive will automatically eject upon unmount of a disc in the drive. The Linux kernel sets this to 0 by default. Set to 0 to disable this behaviour and to 1 to enable it.
- -vV, --volume=V
- Prints out the current volume if V is not given, otherwise sets the current volume to V.
- -V, --version
- Prints out the current version of cdctl.
ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
- LANG
- Sets the output language of cdctl. Currently supported languages are: de (German), and en (English).
- CDROM
- Sets the default cdrom device if not /dev/cdrom. This way you don't always have to specify the name of the device on the command line.
- DEBUG
- Turns debugging on, printing out all sorts of fun information about what cdctl is doing behind the scenes. Worth a shot if something isn't working right or you're just bored.

BUGS
Needs to undergo a massive malloc(3) audit, needs to have all ioctl(2) calls implemented, and needs to explicitly support all kernel versions, rather than specific features. Also needs to have easier-to-remember options; I ran out of letters to use in getopt_long, so I had to resort to allocation based on unused letters.
